Matter has officially arrived, with smart home brands announcing their first Matter-compatible devices today. While Matter 1.0, the new smart home protocol, technically arrived last month, it’s only today that we’re starting to see the first certified products.
Nanoleaf is in the first wave of adopters, adding a set of Matter-friendly basics to its Essentials line.
The brand has announced A19 and GU10 bulbs and a smart strip – but you can’t buy them yet. The lights will be available to purchase globally from the start of 2023 from Nanoleaf, with a price range of $19.99-$99.99 in the US and from £19.99 upwards in the UK.
The lights will offer 16 million colour options, and ultra-bright tuneable whites with colour temperatures from 2700-6500K.
As you’d expect, you’ll be able to control them via a voice assistant or your app of choice. You’ll also be able to schedule colour changing automations throughout the day or set up scenes with other devices. After all, the point of Matter-certified devices is that they’ll work seamlessly with – well, other Matter-certified devices, at least. However, there’s no reason to imagine that they won’t work with your current smart home set-up.
Three lights have been made by a brand that makes lights: sounds pretty basic. But it’s the culmination of a lot of work behind the scenes. Nanoleaf’s CEO & Co-Founder Gimmy Chu explained the process: “For the past two years, our team has been dedicated to bringing these products to life, working very closely within the Connectivity Standards Alliance and Matter Working Group to make this new vision of interoperability and security a reality. We believe that creating a unified experience that allows all devices to work seamlessly together is the stepping stone towards even more intelligence and automation, for a truly smart smart home experience.”
