Google is being sued for allegedly sustaining a “racially biased company tradition” by an individual it introduced on in 2014 to extend hiring from traditionally black schools and universities. The criticism, filed in a San Jose, California, federal courtroom and in search of class-action standing, alleges that Google discriminates towards Black staff and favors white males and says Black staff make up simply 4.4% of staff, in response to Reuters.
The plaintiff, April Curley, alleges she was employed as a “advertising and marketing ploy” and that Google quickly started stereotyping her as an “indignant” Black girl and disregarding her for promotions, the information outlet stated.
Google did not instantly reply to a request for remark.
Curley alleges the corporate fired her in September 2020 after she and her colleagues began engaged on a listing of reforms.
Curley is being represented by Ben Crump, the lawyer who represented the household of George Floyd after Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in Could 2020.
“Whereas Google claims that they have been seeking to enhance range, they have been really undervaluing, underpaying and mistreating their Black staff,” Crump stated in an announcement to Reuters.
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages and to recoup misplaced compensation for present and former Black staff at Google, and to revive their positions.
