Samsung announces two mid-range 5G phones for the UK

Samsung has announced three new Galaxy A phones for the UK market, including two that bring 5G connectivity to the mid-range Galaxy line up. Samsung already has the S20 5G series but the company hopes people on a stricter budget won’t miss out on 5G if they want it in a Sammy device thanks to the new, cheaper handsets.

The Galaxy A71 5G and A51 5G are surprisingly similar phones with a couple of differences. The A71 5G has a 6.7in OLED, quad cameras with a 64MP main sensor, an Octa-core Exynos chip, 8GB RAM, 128GB expandable storage, an in-screen fingerprint sensor and a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging. It’ll cost £519 when it launches “in the coming months at select retailers”, or directly via Samsung’s website.

The A51 5G’s only differences are a 6.5in OLED, quad cameras with a 48Mp main sensor, 6GB RAM and 15W charging. Otherwise, the core specs are the same as the A71. It’ll retail at £429.

Both phones have Samsung’s central 32Mp camera cut out, and eye-catching glossy finishes in black or silver for the A71 and black or white for the A51.

These prices are significantly less than the S20 range, whose cheapest phone is £799. If you want a 5G phone, then these two new A series phones will cost you a lot less whether you buy them outright or on contract.

Samsung also announced the £269 Galaxy A41 that has 4G connectivity but a very similar design to the pricier 5G options. It has a 6.1in OLED that’ll likely be one of the best in its price range given Samsung’s display prowess, while triple cameras, a 25Mp front facing camera in a teardrop notch and in-screen fingerprint sensor keep up the aesthetic and features.

It skimps slightly with a 3,500mAh battery with 15W charging, 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable storage, but stands out with black, silver and a deep blue colour. For the price, it’s a lot of phone. It’s unclear if any of the three announced devices have headphone jacks.

We hope to review the phones when they come out to see if they’re worth your hard earned cash. At this time of pandemic, these cheaper options in Samsung’s range could be sensible buys.
